FROM THE FIELDS: Rain in California's Central Coast

April 18, 2017

California’s Central Coast growing regions including Salinas, Santa Maria, and to a lesser extent, Oxnard, are experiencing their third consecutive day of light showers. Rainfall totals range from a tenth in Oxnard to .50”-75” inches in Salinas and Santa Maria. Poor field conditions are causing harvesting delays and some strawberry and lettuce growers have cancelled today’s harvest.

The combination of rain followed by forecasted temperatures in the mid-70s to low 80s by Saturday, April 22 is expected to cause quality and shelf life concerns in commodity and value-added salad items. Ordering for quick turns is recommended.

Markon inspectors are monitoring supplies closely and will update further as needed.
