UPDATE: Heavy Rain in South Texas

April 14, 2015

Heavy rain and flood advisories are in effect through Friday in South Texas and along the Gulf Coast. While most items loading in South Texas won’t be affected because they are grown in Mexico (broccoli, celery, cucumbers, lettuces, limes, peppers, potatoes, squash, and tomatoes), cabbage and citrus will be impacted. The Texas seasons for corn, green beans, and squash remain on schedule to start by May 1.

Cabbage

  • Rain and mud will slow production
  • Most growers will harvest very little this week, if any
  • Shippers in Central and South Texas packed ahead to fill orders
  • Expect higher prices over the next 7 to 10 days

Citrus

  • Rain will slow harvesting
  • Fruit will need to dry before it can be packed
  • Expect tight supplies this week
  • The market is stable, but could rise due to lower volume
