The Arizona/California desert growing region, along with the transitional growing area of Huron, California, are experiencing an industry-wide spike in insect pressure due to above-normal temperatures over the last three weeks.

Although Markon inspectors work closely with our approved grower-shippers to ensure finished Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) products are clean and free of foreign objects, the lightly-processed nature and unique wash system design of the items listed below can make it extremely difficult to eliminate insects completely when numbers are elevated.

Effective immediately, the attached flyers (English only) will be placed in select RSS cartons to communicate these quality struggles. A version of the flyer translated into French and Spanish is also attached for your reference, as well as photos of current finished packs containing insects.

The RSS products that are being packed with flyers placed inside:

• RSS Washed & Trimmed (W&T) Romaine - 2/5#
• RSS W&T Romaine Fillets - 2/5#
• RSS W&T Green Leaf - 2/5#
• RSS W&T Green Leaf Fillets - 2/5#
• RSS W&T Romaine Hearts - 2/7.5#

As mentioned in the attached flyer, all RSS products are table-ready and generally do not need to be rinsed. However, under certain seasonal conditions, our lightly processed items (such as RSS W&T products) may require an additional on-site rinse under clean running water prior to use.
