UPDATE: Rain in the Desert Growing Region
January 19, 2017
The Arizona/California growing region received trace amounts of rain last night (less than 0.03”). While the growing region continues to receive minimal amounts of rain this morning, harvesting crews are working today and taking necessary precautions to keep lettuce and leafy green boxes dry. Markon does not anticipate harvesting delays. Rain and wind is expected to persist tomorrow, January 20 and Sunday, January 22. Market pricing remains low.
Green Leaf/Romaine
- Prices are low; stocks are ample
- With recent weather conditions being overcast, wet, and windy (with some light ice in the fields), mildew remains prevalent
- Markon First Crop (MFC) Premium Green Leaf and Romaine are sporadically available; Markon Best Available (MBA) is being substituted as necessary due to mildew damage and sporadic decay
Iceberg
- Supplies are readily available; prices are weak
- Heads are of very good size, color, and texture; mildew pressure remains present, but most damage is being removed
- The Markon Quality Assurance team will continue to monitor mildew problems throughout the season
- MFC Premium Iceberg is available; MBA is being substituted due to low weights
