FROM THE FIELDS: Rain in the Arizona/California Desert Regions

January 12, 2017

The Arizona/California Desert growing regions are preparing for another rain event this weekend. Approximately .50” of rain is forecast for Friday, January 13 with another .35” of rain on Saturday morning, January 14. Growers are packing desert row crop items ahead of the rain when possible. With just under 1” of rain expected over both days combined, Markon inspectors predict significant harvesting/loading delays and/or cancelations due to poor field conditions.

Quality problems from the last rain event in late December persist in current supplies; this next storm will continue to cause issues such as bottom rot, increased mildew pressure, and premature pinking in commodity and value-added lettuce, tender leaf, and other desert row crops.

Markon inspectors will continue to monitor quality and field conditions closely and work with growers to select the best lots available.
