Excessive rainfall in the main basil growing regions of Columbia is causing supply shortages in the U.S. Columbia is a main source during the winter; heavy rains have caused crop damage and heavy losses. Prices will escalate over the upcoming weeks until volume rebounds.
- Excessive moisture from rain has caused mold and mildew to form on basil leaves, creating unusable product
- In-coming supplies will undergo extra quality checks that separate damaged product
- Demand is strong due to the holidays; expect tight stocks for the next two to three weeks
- Many suppliers of fresh basil are reporting day-to-day availability depending on the quality of shipments
