FROM THE FIELDS: Minor Harvesting Delays in the Desert Region
December 19, 2016
Strong and very cold winds swept through the Arizona/California desert growing region on Friday and Saturday, December 16 and 17. Temperatures dropped to the low 30s on the morning of Sunday, December 18, causing widespread lettuce ice on most desert area vegetable crops. The winds returned overnight and this morning, preventing lettuce ice from developing in most production areas. Only minor harvesting delays are expected.
Markon inspectors are monitoring commodity and value-added supplies closely for wind and cold-related defects and will update further as needed.
