UPDATE: Onions

September 30, 2016

Fresh-run Markon First Crop (MFC) Onions from Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and Washington are readily available. Demand is steady in all growing areas.  Prices are expected to remain stable for reds, yellows, and whites. Storage crop harvesting is in full swing and will be completed by mid- to late October, depending on the growing region.

Colorado

  • MFC Red and Yellow Onions will be available through March 2017
  • Hail and rain storms moved through some of Colorado’s growing regions in mid-July and the past few weeks, lowering yields and affecting quality
  • Due to questionable quality, most growers are moving onions into storage facilities, rather than to the marketplace
  • Expect supplies to begin shipping out of storage in mid-October
  • The yellow onion crop is dominated by medium, followed by jumbo sizes
  • Jumbo red onions are plentiful

Idaho/Oregon

  • MFC Red and Yellow Onions will be on the market through late April/early May 2017
  • Weather has been ideal during harvests
  • The yellow crop is dominated by jumbo stocks
  • Red onions are also dominated by jumbo-size supplies
  • Oregon and Idaho onions possess a solid, globe-like shape, firm texture, and moderately spicy flavor
  • Limited quantities of storage onions are currently on the market; growers will ship exclusively out of storage by early November

Utah

  • MFC Red and Yellow Onions will be shipped through late March 2017
  • Weather has been excellent during harvests
  • Mirroring Idaho/Oregon, Utah’s red and yellow onions are dominated by jumbo supplies
  • Limited quantities of storage onions are on the market; growers will ship exclusively out of storage in late October

Washington

  • MFC Red and Yellow Onion shipments will run through late April 2017
  • Both red and yellow onions are dominated by jumbo stocks
  • Weather has been ideal during the early stages of harvesting, resulting in the larger size profile, but Washington has experienced higher-than-normal temperatures that could diminish size by the end of the season
  • Washington onions possess a solid, globe-like shape, firm texture, and moderately spicy flavor; skins are less feathery than supplies from California and New Mexico
  • Limited quantities of storage onions are on the market; growers will ship exclusively out of storage in mid-October
