UPDATE: ASPARAGUS

March 16, 2021

Asparagus prices are rising. Recent low temperatures in Caborca, Mexico limited spear production.

  • Cold weather and a storm system that brought rain and hail to Caborca, Mexico hindered production over the weekend
    • Temperatures were in the mid- to high 30s
    • Forecasts call for mid- to high-80s later this week
    • Ground temperatures will rebound, promoting spear growth
  • Despite the cold weather, quality is excellent: spears are uniform and tips are firm
  • The Caborca season will wind down in late March; production will transition to Central Mexico in early to mid-April
  • Peruvian asparagus production remains minimal; volume will increase in early April to coincide with the Mexican growing region transition
  • Expect higher prices into April as Easter demand begins to ramp up next week and Mexican production transitions from Caborca to Central Mexico
