UPDATE: Strawberries
February 24, 2017
Due to recent storms on the West Coast, California strawberries have become extremely limited. Florida and Mexico are extending their seasons to help meet demand, but these regions are experiencing their own set of weather challenges as their seasons wind down.
- Markon First Crop Strawberries are not available; packer label is being substituted
- Prices are rising
- California growers are sending fruit to freezer and processing markets due to heavy rain damage; fresh-market supplies will be available by the middle of next week
- Mexico’s high temperatures have reduced quality; some product is being rejected at the Texas border, further reducing stocks
- Florida received significant rain on Wednesday, February 22; most growers are sending fruit to freezer and processing markets due to quality concerns
- Shelf-life is much shorter than normal in all regions
- Expect extremely low volume through the middle of next week
