UPDATE: Tropical Storm Otto
November 21, 2016
Tropical Storm Otto is located about 300 miles off the eastern coast of Nicaragua. The storm is stationary at this time, but expected to move slowly westward. Guatemala and Honduras, located just north of the storm’s expected path are the primary offshore growing regions for cantaloupe and honeydew melons. Production in Guatemala is underway now; heavy downpours in this region could delay production over the next 10 days.
- Rainfall totals of 5”-8” are forecast in Costa Rica; 2-3” will fall in parts of Guatemala and Honduras
- The storm is expected to become a rare, late-season hurricane before making landfall in Nicaragua or Costa Rica; it should weaken rapidly after making landfall due to the high terrain of these regions
- Expect prices to remain elevated as heavy precipitation could delay production and limit supplies over the next 7-10 days
