UPDATE: Tropical Storm Hermine
Initial damage reports from Hurricane Hermine are less severe than expected. Growers have resumed harvests in multiple regions of Georgia and the Carolinas. Both the fast pace of the storm and dry soil conditions at the beginning of the season helped reduced overall impact to the growing regions.
Sustained winds of 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph hit the area; 3” to 5” of rain were recorded
Crop conditions are being reported as normal despite sporadic bloom drop from high wind speeds; bloom drop will affect supplies in 4 to 6 weeks when blooms of cucumbers, squash, and tomato plants would have been harvested
Favorable growing conditions are forecast over the next 7 to 10 days across Georgia and the Carolinas

UPDATE: TROPICAL STORM HERMINE
August 31, 2016
Tropical Depression Nine, now centered 400 miles southwest of Florida has been upgrade to Tropical Storm Hermine and is expected to reach near-hurricane strength before making landfall in Northern Florida by late Thursday, September 1. The system will then accelerate northeast across Southern Georgia and the Carolinas.
The southern transition of cucumber and squash harvesting is underway, with new crops ramping up in Georgia and North Carolina over the next two weeks. Heavy, sustained downpours in these regions could delay expected harvest dates and potentially lead to significant losses in the fall crop.
Rainfall totals of 4” to 6” are forecast in parts of Georgia and the Carolinas; wind speeds as strong as 65 miles per hour are expected along the storm’s path
Potential delays are predicted in Georgia, where new crop squash harvesting will begin over the next week
Quality issues such as bruising, decay, scarring, and wind damage may occur
Expect prices to remain elevated over the next 10 days as growers assess the impact of the storm
