UPDATE: Tropical Depression 16-E Affecting Mexico and Yuma Desert

September 21, 2015

Tropical Depression 16-E made landfall early this morning on the Central Baja California Peninsula. After crossing the Gulf of California, it made a second landfall in the northwestern part of mainland Mexico. The system is bringing heavy rain, 3 to 5 inches with isolated amounts up to 12 inches, along with high winds near 35 mph and higher gusts. Through tonight the system will weaken and bring moisture into portions of southern Arizona.

  • Baja, Mexico is the main fall growing region for chile peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes through late November
  • The northwestern Mexican state of Sonora is the prime fall production area for cucumbers, hard squash, soft squash, and watermelon during October and November
  • Harvesting schedules in Baja and mainland Mexico have been curtailed today; expect lower volume and higher prices
  • Damage to crops will result in compromised quality and elevated prices through Mexico’s fall and early winter season
  • The Imperial Valley and Yuma, Arizona growing region will receive sporadic heavy rains today through tomorrow where harvesting of green leaf, iceberg, and romaine will be harvested by early November
    • Green leaf, iceberg, and romaine will be harvested by early November in this region
    • Over two inches of rain is expected
    • Most growers have now completed plantings that could be disrupted by the rains and heavy winds
    • These rains could lower yields and cause supply issues during early to mid-November
  • Growers will evaluate crops over the next few days; Markon will follow up with any further developments
