UPDATE: TOMATOES

Florida tomatoes have transitioned from the south to the central growing regions of the state. The grape tomato market remains elevated; however, supplies are increasing and prices are forecast to ease.

Round Tomatoes

  • Florida mature green volume has increased as crops transition from the south to the central regions
    • Most growers are harvesting crown picks; large sizes are most prevalent
    • Quality is very good in Florida; expect yields to increase over the next few weeks
  • Mexican vine ripe production is steady
    • The main growing region is in Sinaloa; sizes are dominated by 5x5 and larger packs
    • Quality is good with evening temperatures in 40 F range
    • Some lots are deep red color, making softness a concern
  • Overall prices are steady

Roma Tomatoes

  • Florida supplies are sufficient; South Florida is the main growing region
    • Growers are harvesting crown picks; jumbo, extra-large, and large sizes dominate availability
    • Quality is excellent
  • Mexico is the primary North American growing area
    • Sinaloa growers are harvesting their last fields before transitioning to northern regions in May
    • Ample supplies are forecast
    • Quality is excellent
  • Prices are expected to remain stable

Grape Tomatoes

  • Florida supplies are slowly increasing; yields are up
    • Recent, favorable weather will increase volume over the next couple of weeks
    • Overall quality is good
  • Mexican production is lighter due to a harvesting gap
    • The final Sinaloa fields should start producing over the next week and will run through April
    • Overall quality is fair
  • Prices remain elevated, but will ease in the coming weeks

Cherry Tomatoes

  • Florida is the main growing region
    • Supplies are adequate
    • The best quality is from this area
  • Mexican volume is low due to acreage reduction this season; overall quality is fair
  • Prices are steady
