UPDATE: Tomato Prices

August 08, 2019

California production is down. Supplies have tightened. Prices have jumped in all growing regions.

  • California growers planted fewer acres due to last season’s weak tomato prices
  • In addition, yield per acre is well-below normal for this time of year due to weather
    • Record rainfall in April and May disrupted plantings and young growth
    • High temperatures in June and July shocked plants, caused bloom drop, and are currently slowing growth
  • East Coast production is not enough to meet demand
  • Mexico supply is down this time of year due to typically high production in the states during the summer
  • Expect elevated prices into September or until California’s yields increase
  • New crop Florida supplies will start shipping in a limited manner in late September
