UPDATE: Tomato Prices
August 08, 2019
California production is down. Supplies have tightened. Prices have jumped in all growing regions.
- California growers planted fewer acres due to last season’s weak tomato prices
-
In addition, yield per acre is well-below normal for this time of year due to weather
- Record rainfall in April and May disrupted plantings and young growth
- High temperatures in June and July shocked plants, caused bloom drop, and are currently slowing growth
- East Coast production is not enough to meet demand
- Mexico supply is down this time of year due to typically high production in the states during the summer
- Expect elevated prices into September or until California’s yields increase
- New crop Florida supplies will start shipping in a limited manner in late September
