Persistently warm temperatures since the start of the Arizona/California desert winter growing season have led to the rapid growth of many crops. The warm weather is causing shelf-life issues in tender leaf items. The fragile, thin texture of arugula, spinach, and spring mix makes them susceptible to mechanical damage, premature breakdown, yellowing, and heavier amounts of moisture. 

• High humidity, dew point, and early morning condensation are resulting in higher moisture content in the leaves which is released through respiration after product has been harvested and packed
• Wind, which plays a role in keeping the densely planted tender leaf items dry, has been very minimal so far this season
• Processing plants are making the necessary harvesting and processing adjustments to minimize these issues  
• Cooler day time and night temperatures are expected by the tail end of the week and will continue into next week
• Stronger, thicker texture and improved quality are expected with the anticipated cooler temperatures
• Markon inspectors are monitoring quality closely and will update further as needed
