UPDATE SUMMARY: Week of November 2, 2015

The broccoli and cauliflower markets are escalating; cool weather is tightening supplies and strengthening demand. Fresh garlic is extremely limited; Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) orders are being kept to average volumes. The fall harvesting transition from the Salinas Valley to the Arizona/California desert region is underway; supplies are limited, driving up prices and bringing an end to the Salinas season.
Broccoli/Cauliflower
- The broccoli market is steady, but expected to inch up over the next several weeks due to stronger demand and tighter supplies
- The Salinas Valley season is ending
- Arizona/California desert harvesting will begin soon
- Cauliflower prices are escalating
- The market will rise into the 20s by next week
- Strong demand and cool weather are tightening stocks
- Expect firm broccoli and cauliflower prices for the next several weeks
Garlic
- Fresh supplies are limited, especially peeled garlic
- RSS Peeled Garlic orders are being filled, but being kept to average volumes
- Supplies will meet demand, but growers are monitoring their inventories
Fall 2015 Harvesting Transition
- The fall harvesting transition from the Salinas Valley to Huron, California (the San Joaquin Valley) then to the Yuma, Arizona/California desert growing region is underway
- Green leaf, iceberg, and romaine are still being harvested in Salinas, but the season will conclude by the week of November 23
- Tight supplies and elevated prices will persist over the next several weeks as the industry transitions from the Salinas Valley to the Yuma/California desert growing region
Lemons
- New crop Arizona/California desert supplies and San Joaquin Valley stocks continue to increase
- Prices remain elevated, but are starting to ease due to increasing volume
- Markon First Crop (MFC) and Markon Essentials Lemons are sporadic; packer label domestic and Mexican lemons are being substituted
RSS Fresh-Cut Grapefruit Products
- Markon’s supplier of fresh-cut grapefruit has started transitioning into new crop Texas Rio supplies
- Expect variability in the internal color of fresh-cut grapefruit items due to mixed varieties of raw product
- A full transition into Texas Rio grapefruit is expected by the week of November 9
Strawberries
- The season in Salinas/Watsonville, California has ended; limited quantities are available in the Santa Maria and Oxnard, California growing regions
- Prices are escalating; demand exceeds supply
- MFC Strawberries are not available; Markon Best Available Strawberries in one-pound clamshells and packer label supplies are being substituted
- Expect extremely limited stocks for the next four to six weeks
