UPDATE SUMMARY: WEEK OF NOVEMBER 16, 2020

Iceberg
Production has ended in the Huron and Salinas, California growing regions; Santa Maria, California harvests are winding down and will end by late November

  • The Arizona/California desert season is ramping up quickly
    • Recent temperatures in the mid-80s helped promote growth; overall industry field weights are light but will continue to increase daily
    • Quality is excellent: sporadic growth cracks, large ribs, and seeder are present in some lots
  • Markets will decrease into next week as volume continues to rise and Thanksgiving demand tapers off
  • Please note, COVID restrictions may greatly affect demand as foodservice establishments are forced to reduce operations

Tomatoes

  • Florida has resumed harvesting after heavy rain and winds from Tropical Storm Eta
  • Central Florida has suffered crop loss from extreme rain in the Palmetto and Ruskin growing regions
  • Quality will be impacted; soft spots and decay are concerns
  • Yields are below normal
  • Act of God clauses are being implemented
  • Mexican shipments are below normal; increased volume is not expected until mid-December when new crop harvesting starts
