UPDATE SUMMARY: Week of May 30, 2016

Low spring temperatures tightened iceberg supplies and reduced yields, resulting in active prices; processor demand is strong due to limited stocks and light weights. Expect elevated markets to persist through next week. Strawberry supplies are ample; prices are slightly lower than last week. Weather has been favorable; quality is excellent in the Salinas/Watsonville, California growing region. Most fields in the Santa Maria, California growing region are past their harvesting peaks; production will decrease over the next several weeks.
Iceberg Lettuce
- This spring’s abnormally cool weather continues to tighten supplies and lower yields
- Prices are rising; demand is strong
- Hot weather is forecast for the end of this week; dehydration, growth cracking, and internal/external burn issues are expected to develop by early next week
- Elevated prices will persist through next week
Strawberries
- Supplies are ample
- Prices are slightly lower than last week
- Markon First Crop Strawberries are available out of Salinas and Watsonville; Markon Best Available is being substituted as needed out of Santa Maria
- Expect markets to remain low for the next 7 to 10 days
