UPDATE SUMMARY: Week of March 18, 2016

Record amounts of rain received over the past few days in South Texas has halted grapefruit harvest; remaining supplies will be inconsistent with more shippers finishing by the end of the week. California grapefruit is on the market; supplies are adequate. Strawberry supplies remain very tight in all areas; supply exceeds demand. Markets continue to rise as overall supplies are expected to remain tight through Mother’s Day.

 

Grapefruit

  • Supplies out of South Texas will be inconsistent with most shippers finishing by the end of the week; California supplies are adequate
  • Markets are stable but expected to rise as demand moves from Texas to California
  • Quality is good
  • Summer Ruby grapefruit varieties will start in early July

Onions

  • Due to rain showers and heavy thunderstorms forecast through the week, Markon First Crop (MFC) shipments out of the Rio Grande Valley (southern tip of Texas) will be infrequent
  • Supplies out of Mexico remain sporadic due to inconsistent weather patterns
  • Storage supplies out of Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and Washington will diminish by early May; expect lower quality in storage shipments
  • Full harvesting will begin in Imperial Valley, California next week; light shipments are already beginning later this week

Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) Super Slaw

  • Due to limited supplies of quality Brussels sprouts, RSS Super Slaw is temporarily unavailable and packer label will be substituted for orders loading April 20 and 21
  • Super Slaw packer label product will not include the Brussels sprout component of the blend
  • Availability of RSS Super Slaw is expected to be sporadic over the next several weeks; packer label will be substituted as needed
  • Expect limited supplies until the end of May to early June

Salinas Valley Weather

  • Cloudy skies with occasional rain showers will move into the Salinas Valley on Friday, April 22; a cold front is also moving into the area, bringing temperatures down to the mid-to high 60s and gusty winds for most of next week
  • Cooler weather and rain will slow growth and affect supplies and yields
  • Higher prices for green leaf, iceberg, romaine, and strawberry items are expected into next week

Strawberries

  • Supplies remain very tight this week; demand exceeds supply in all areas
  • Markets are higher
  • MFC Strawberries are available; Markon Best Available and packer label supplies are being substituted as needed
  • Markets continue to rise as overall supplies are expected to remain tight through Mother’s Day (May 8)
