UPDATE SUMMARY: WEEK OF June 3, 2021

Brussels Sprouts

  • Mexico’s Baja region, Central Mexico, and Oxnard, California are the current primary growing areas
    • The Santa Maria season has started, though initial size profile is small
    • Salinas Valley production is scheduled to begin in late June/early July
  • Quality
    • Expect poor quality in Central Mexico; elevated temperatures are causing discoloration and increasing insect pressure  
    • Growing conditions in Baja and Oxnard remain ideal; quality is very good
    • Markon orders are being filled with product from Baja and Oxnard for best quality
  • Expect prices to remain elevated over the next two to three weeks when the Santa Maria size profile increases and the Salinas Valley harvest begins

California Strawberries

  • Watsonville is the main growing region for MFC Strawberries at this time   
  • Demand remains strong as more growers in the Santa Maria region continue to switch fields to processing, reducing overall supplies
  • Markets will remain strong heading into next week
  • Warmer weather is on the horizon for the end of next week which is expected to aid growth slightly over the next 10 to 14 days

Cucumbers

  • The season in mainland Mexico (into Nogales Arizona) is wrapping up
  • Mexican production is shifting to the Baja Peninsula with full capacity expected in 7-10 days
    • Labor issues and elevated transportation costs in Mexico are having an effect on markets
    • Quality is excellent
  • East Coast production is in full swing in Georgia
    • Rain showers could limit harvesting this week
    • Quality is very good
  • The North Carolina season is forecast to start next week
  • Expect slightly higher prices

Onions
California

  • MFC Onions will ship out of the Imperial Valley through next week
  • MFC Onions from the San Joaquin Valley will begin shipping the week of June 7
  • Supplies favor medium to jumbo sizes, with adequate supplies of colossals and super colossals

New Mexico

  • MFC Red and Yellow Onion supplies continue to ramp up
  • Size is dominated by medium and jumbo sizes; larger onions are expected to increase in mid-June
  • Packer label Mexican onions are also available

Washington

  • Washington storage crop MFC Onions will remain on the market through the end of next week
  • Expect diminished quality in remaining storage shipments  
  • Onions will have golden, cured skins, but may be softer than early and mid-season stocks
  • Problems may include occasional internal decay, mold, and multiple centers/hearts
