UPDATE SUMMARY: WEEK OF JUNE 24, 2021

Bell Peppers
Green Bells

  • Markon First Crop (MFC) and Markon Essentials (ESS) Green Bell Peppers are available
  • Mexican supplies (into South Texas) are tight
  • High temperatures have increased growth in California’s Fresno area; size is dominated by jumbo and extra-large peppers
  • Stocks are ample in Georgia and North Carolina
  • Markets are lower

Red Bells

  • MFC and ESS Red Bell Peppers are available
  • The heat wave in Imperial Valley, California reached temperatures as high as 115F that accelerated the fruit ripening process
  • East Coast supplies are limited
  • Canadian greenhouses are expected to have a lull in the production schedule over the next one to two weeks
  • Prices are steady

Cauliflower

  • ESS Cauliflower is available
  • Last week’s hot weather accelerated growth, resulting in fewer available supplies
  • Expect some discoloration and increased size
  • Elevated markets are forecast for the next 7-10 days

Idaho Potatoes

  • 40- to 70-count pricing will continue to climb weekly through the rest of the 2020/2021 season
  • Expect 80- to 100- count prices to hold steady
  • Suppliers are only covering regular, weekly averages of 40- and 50- count sizes   
  • Shippers need up to 10 working days (in some cases) to generate sufficient volume for 40- and 50-count orders
  • The end of 2020/2021 season is currently forecast for mid-August
  • New crop 2021/2022 harvesting is expected to begin the first week of August

Lemons

  • MFC and ESS Lemons are available
  • The Southern California coastal region is the main growing area
  • Shelf-life is shorter at this time of the year due to the heat and strong winds in the Southern California coastal region
  • Quality remains good
  • Expect prices to continue climbing through the summer
  • Chilean stocks are expected to enter the market this week
  • Mexican supplies will become available in the next two to three weeks

Onions
California and New Mexico

  • MFC Onions are expected to be available through mid-August

Washington

  • Washington storage crop MFC Red Onions have been depleted
  • The season for MFC Yellow Onions will end early next week
  • Expect diminished quality in remaining storage shipments  
  • Onions will have golden, cured skins, but may be softer than early and mid-season stocks
  • Problems may include occasional internal decay, mold, and multiple centers/hearts

Ready-Set-Serve Peeled Garlic

  • California growers are in their last lots of storage supplies and yields are poor with quality issues
  • Most processors of peeled garlic will be utilizing Mexican raw product over the next two to three weeks to help bridge the gap
  • Pungency and oil content is lower than California garlic but better than Chinese garlic
  • California new crop harvesting will begin in a limited manner on June 28; adequate supplies of new crop California peeled garlic will start shipping the week of July 19   

Red and Yellow Potatoes
California

  • Red and yellow potatoes will ship through early August

Idaho

  • MFC Red and Yellow Potatoes are expected to remain available through mid-August
  • No supply gap is anticipated between the current and new crop
  • New crop potatoes will become available the first week of August
  • North Dakota
  • MFC Red Potatoes will be available through the end of next week
  • New crop red and yellow potatoes will begin to ship the first week of August

Washington

  • The Washington new crop season is expected to get underway mid-August
  • Wisconsin
  • New crop harvesting of MFC Potatoes will begin in early August
