UPDATE SUMMARY: WEEK OF JUNE 17, 2019

June 20, 2019

Avocados

  • California fruit is available, but extremely limited
    • Crop estimates are down approximately 50% due to last summer’s warmer-than-normal temperatures that caused severe bloom drop (affecting this summer’s crop)
    • All sizes are scarce
  • Expect elevated markets through mid-July, when summer volume will increase in Mexico

Colored Potatoes

  • California: Reduced acreage and unseasonably cold, wet weather has reduced volume
  • Colorado: The season is ending; new crop stocks will be available in late August
  • Eastern Shore: Production will start in North Carolina and Virginia the week of June 24
  • Florida: Abnormally warm and humid weather brought the season to an early end
  • Idaho: Supplies remain limited
  • Texas: Adverse weather conditions have limited supplies, but volume will increase by mid-July

Iceberg Lettuce

  • Processors must harvest more acres than normal to fill commodity and value-added orders
  • Regional seasons will begin next month in Colorado, Eastern Canada, and the Northeastern U.S.; however, past and current adverse weather conditions will delay their normal start dates
  • Lower yields are forecast in all growing areas; demand will continue to exceed supply through early July

Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine

  • Quality issues are being reported from the fields; expect lower harvestable yields in the coming weeks
  • Supplies have also decreased due to gaps in planting schedules
  • Prices continue to rise, stocks will remain tight for the next couple of weeks

Green Beans

  • Ready-Set-Serve Trimmed Green Beans are limited; packer label will be substituted as needed
  • High temperatures have diminished supplies in the growing regions of Texas, Georgia, and North Carolina
  • The Ohio season is delayed due to record rainfall; the new expected start date is mid-July
  • Expect elevated markets and low volume through July
