UPDATE SUMMARY: WEEK OF JULY 29, 2021

Broccoli

  • Markon First Crop (MFC) Broccoli is available
  • Expect prices to climb over the next 10 to 14 days as yields decrease in the fields      
  • Overall quality is good: crown size is large
  • Demand is increasing and markets are expected to maintain elevated levels over the next 10 to 14 days

Cauliflower

  • Markon Essentials Cauliflower is available
  • Recent cool weather has slowed growth, resulting in fewer available supplies
  • Expect good quality with great color and ideal size
  • Elevated markets are forecast for the next 7 to 10 days

Limes

  • Recent rain in the primary growing region of Veracruz, Mexico is reducing availability
    • Quality issues such as skin breakdown, oil spotting, and styler are concerns
    • Growers must limit harvesting time due to wet weather
  • Size is dominated by 150-, 175-, and 200-count foodservice-friendly sizes
  • Prices for all sizes are climbing due to reduced yields
  • Expect high markets through August

Onions

  • MFC Onions will ship out of California’s San Joaquin Valley through mid-August; the New Mexico season will run concurrently  
  • Colorado stocks will start shipping the week of August 16
  • Utah-grown supplies will become available late August
  • Onions out of the Northwest will have a rounder, more globe-like shape than stocks shipped during the spring/summer months; early season stocks will still exhibit thin, light-colored skins until shipped out of storage

Squash

  • Rain has slowed production in the East Coast regions of Michigan, New Jersey, and North Carolina
    • Quality is good
    • Yellow squash supplies are tightening
  • Smaller summer local/regional deals across the country are supplementing stocks   
  • California’s Central Valley is experiencing excessive heat which may impact production this week
    • Santa Maria volume is steady
    • Overall quality is good
  • High heat is reducing harvesting time in Mexico’s Baja Peninsula
  • Expect stocks to increase next week; prices should soften
