UPDATE SUMMARY: WEEK OF JANUARY 20, 2020

Broccoli, Iceberg, Green Leaf, and Romaine
  • Weather is warming, increasing plant maturity and yields 
    • Broccoli quality is fair, but improving 
    • Iceberg quality is very good once outer leaves are trimmed 
    • Burning and blistering are not as prevalent in leafy greens
  • Expect prices to continue inching down through the month   
 
Limes
  • Markon First Crop (MFC) and Markon Essentials (ESS) Limes are available
  • Volume has been ample; crossings into South Texas have been higher than normal
  • Rain has slowed harvesting this week with crossings beginning a downward trend
 
Oranges
  • MFC and ESS Oranges are available
  • 113- and 138-count sizes are limited
  • Navel supplies will be available through late May
  • New crop California Valencia production is expected to start late April/early May
  • Florida stocks will be available through May; medium sizes (80- and 100- count fruit) dominate the market 
 
Pears
  • The Washington season for MFC Bartlett Pears will conclude at the end of January
  • MFC D’Anjou Pears are readily available and will be on the market through July
  • The new crop packer label California Bartlett season will begin in June   
  • New crop 2020-2021 Washington MFC Bartlett Pears will enter the market in mid-August 
  • Production for 2020-2021 new crop Washington MFC D’Anjou Pears is forecast for late August
 
Strawberries
  • Freezing temperatures and light rain are expected in Plant City, Florida this week 
  • The Ventura County, California season is getting a slow start due to cooler-than-normal temperatures 
  • Mexican stocks continue to cross into South Texas and Yuma, Arizona
 
Tender Leaf Items
  • Tender leaf items (particularly arugula and spinach) are limited 
  • The Arizona/California desert growing region has experienced inclement weather, causing quality and shelf-life challenges 
  • Items such as arugula, spinach, and other spring mix varieties are exhibiting varying amounts of mildew, discoloration, mechanical damage, and reduced shelf-life
