UPDATE SUMMARY: WEEK OF JANUARY 13, 2020

California Oranges
  • Markon First Crop and Markon Essentials Navel Oranges are available
  • Navel supplies will be available through late May
  • New crop California Valencia production is expected to start in late April/early May
  • Florida stocks will be on the market through May; 80- and 100- count sizes dominate the crop 
Broccoli
  • Mexican supplies (into South Texas) are adequate, but prices are climbing 
  • Pin rot, mildew, and decay may be present in finished packs
  • Expect trigger level pricing on value-added florets into next week  
Brussels Sprouts
  • California’s season is winding down
  • Mexico’s production is behind schedule due to low temperatures over the past six weeks
  • Expect Ready-Set-Serve Brussels Sprouts to reach trigger levels by the middle of next week     
Cucumbers
  • Cool weather, wind, and rain have slowed production and reduced yields in Mexico
  • Availability out of Florida is limited due to increased demand from the West Coast
  • Expect tight supplies and high prices for the next two to three weeks
Iceberg
  • Temperatures are warming in the Arizona/California desert region
  • Head weights remain lower than normal; however, higher temperatures are increasing yields
Potatoes
  • Internal black spotting and bruising can occur when raw product is hauled at low temperatures
  • High winds, drifting snow, and slick pavements are causing highway closures
  • Hazardous road conditions will affect both inbound and outbound trucks
  • Idaho prices continue to rise, but should stabilize in February and March
  • Washington Norkotah markets are elevated; demand is shifting from Idaho to Washington 
Squash
  • Cool weather and rain have slowed production and reduced yields in Mexico
  • Demand has shifted to the East Coast, further tightening supplies; large sizes are especially limited
  • Quality is fair 
Strawberries
  • Florida volume is below projected levels this week
  • Approximately a half inch of rain is forecast for the California growing regions tomorrow
  • Mexican stocks continue to cross into South Texas and Yuma, Arizona
  • Oxnard supplies will increase over the next 10 to 14 days
