UPDATE SUMMARY: WEEK OF FEBRUARY 16, 2015

February 20, 2015

Abnormally warm temperatures in the Arizona/California desert growing region have caused iceberg heads to grow inconsistently and carton weights to vary greatly from one lot to another; liner lettuce weights range from 33 to 49 pounds. Florida tomato supplies will tighten for the next two to three weeks due to recent sub-freezing temperatures; expect higher prices.

Freeze Warning in Florida
•    Sub-freezing temperatures will cause plant damage and stunt growth, resulting in product shortages and elevated prices
•    Bell pepper harvests will be curtailed to avoid bruising
•    Tomatoes are not maturing due to below-normal temperatures
•    Expect the markets in Florida and Mexico to climb over the next 7 to 10 days

Iceberg Quality
•    Arizona/California desert supplies are abundant
•    The market remains low despite inconsistent weights
•    Markon First Crop Premium Iceberg Lettuce is not available due to low weights; Markon Best Available is being substituted
•    Prices are expected to rise when the season ends in the coming weeks

Tomatoes
•    Very cool temperatures in Florida are slowing the color process and keeping supplies limited
•    Prices are rising in Florida and Mexico; demand is shifting to Mexican product
•    Quality remains excellent in both regions
•    Florida stocks will be limited over the next few weeks; Mexico volume remains high
