California Drought

• Higher-than-normal temperatures in California coupled with minimal snow and rain during the 2017-2018 winter season are leading many to believe the state will slide back into a drought
• Moderate drought conditions are already being experienced in 46% of the state, mainly in Southern California and California’s San Joaquin Valley
• Most of California’s reservoirs have water stored from last year’s wet winter
• Water in these reservoirs will help the state make it through a dry year

Limes

• Heavy rain and wind several months ago in the primary growing region of Veracruz, Mexico resulted in bloom drop
• Remaining blooms have now matured into fruit and are ready to harvest, but overall yields are lower than normal because there are fewer pieces of fruit on each tree

·         Lime prices are quickly rising due to very light supplies in Mexico, especially small sizes

• Overall quality is good, but any moisture from current rainfall may result in sporadic stylar/end break down and decay issues
• Markon First Crop Limes are available from Mexico (loading in McAllen, Texas)

Spring 2018 Harvesting Transition

• The Yuma growing season will end in approximately eight weeks; Transitions to Huron and Salinas Valley will start the week of March 19th
• Harvesting schedules will be drawn out to minimize any shortages during transition to the Salinas Valley
• With minimal rain this winter, the Salinas Valley spring start date will be approximately two weeks earlier than normal
• Salinas Valley weather over the next few weeks will determine when the first harvest begins
