California’s cold temperatures and coastal drizzle have slowed growth in commodity items such as green leaf, iceberg, leafy greens, romaine, and strawberries. Strong Mother’s Day demand will keep prices elevated and supplies tight for the next three to four weeks.

California Strawberries

• Coastal drizzle and below-average temperatures are slowing growth; the majority of berries are medium or smaller in size
• Prices are rising; demand exceeds supply
• Markon First Crop and Markon Best Available Strawberries are not available; packer label is being substituted in all California growing regions
• Inconsistent weather patterns over the next 7 to 10 days will keep supplies tight as demand strengthens for Mother’s Day

Melons

• Offshore cantaloupe and honeydew supplies from Guatemala are available on both coasts; offshore watermelon production is winding down, making Mexico the main supply source at this time
• Cantaloupe and honeydew prices are easing; the watermelon market remains high, but is starting to inch down
• Cantaloupe and honeydew quality is excellent in all areas; watermelon quality has improved
• Expect sufficient supplies and steady prices for several weeks

Salinas Valley Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine

• Last week’s warm weather promoted growth, but this week’s cold temperatures will slowly reverse any progress made in green leaf, iceberg, and romaine crops
• Prices for most commodities remain elevated
• Quality problems such as light weights, low yields, and mildew pressure will diminish volume
