UPDATE: STRAWBERRY QUALITY

November 05, 2020

California’s strawberry quality challenges persist. Daytime temperatures are expected to drop 30 degrees over the next several days with nighttime temperatures just above freezing. Forecasts are calling for a 50% chance of rain Saturday morning, and a 60% chance on Sunday. Harvesting delays may be possible on Monday, November 9, depending on rain totals over the weekend.

  • Markon First Crop Strawberries are available in both plastic and recyclable cardboard clamshells
  • Current quality challenges include softness, decay, and sunburn as a result of high temperatures over the past two months
  • Rain-related quality issues to look out for include bleeding, bruising, and water damage
  • Cold-chain management remains a vital component in maximizing shelf-life
