UPDATE: STRAWBERRY QUALITY

November 03, 2020

California strawberry quality challenges persist. After four separate heatwaves over the past two months, growers’ pack-outs are off as much as 50%. Harvestable fruit is small in size and will have some soft shoulders and possibly develop decay within a few days. Crews are doing everything possible to limit the amount of quality problems, but they are not able to remove everything from the final packs at this point. High quality berries will be extremely tight through November.

  • Markon First Crop Strawberries are available in both plastic and recyclable cardboard clamshells
  • Quality challenges include softness, decay, and sunburn as a result of high temperatures
  • Pack-outs are down by 50%
  • Cold-chain management remains a vital component in maximizing shelf-life
