UPDATE: Strawberries

The Oxnard and Santa Maria, California growing regions received another series of storms that hit yesterday, Tuesday March 20 and brought up to two inches of rain to some areas. The wet weather is expected to last through Thursday evening, March 22, bringing a total of six inches. Growers have cancelled harvesting due to the muddy/wet field conditions and may not be able to enter the fields until next week. Availability is extremely tight.
- Markon First Crop Strawberries are not available; Markon Best Available and packer label are being substituted due to rain
- Post-rain quality and low yields are major concerns as growers cull damaged fruit
- Bruising, decay, water damage, wind scarring, and white shoulders are persistent problems
- Shelf-life is much shorter than normal in all regions
- Expect tight supplies and elevated prices over the next several weeks
- Mexico’s strawberry season has ended for most suppliers; production will continue to decline over the next few weeks
- Florida’s season is winding down and will be finished by the end of the week
