Light rain and mist in Oxnard and Santa Maria, California this morning has slowed harvesting. Most crews are scheduled to work as long as possible and/or until field conditions become too muddy to proceed.

Most orders for Monday, April 11 will be packed before the bulk of the rain hits tomorrow Saturday, April 9, but some orders will need to be packed after the rain due to strong demand and a limited harvesting window.

Oxnard supplies are expected to be more impacted by the rain than Santa Maria stocks as these plants are nearing the end of their season. If quality suffers too much, some growers could end production in Oxnard for the season and focus on Santa Maria and Salinas/Watsonville. New crop supplies in Santa Maria and Salinas/Watsonville are expected to rebound from the rain quickly, although production increases will be impeded.

Overall supplies are expected to tighten next week as more rain is in the forecast for Wednesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 14. Prices are poised to rise with Mother’s Day demand just around the corner. Expect quality problems such as bleeding, bruising, decay, light color, soft texture, and water damage next week.
