UPDATE: Strawberries

Markon First Crop (MFC) Strawberries are available out of Coachella, California; Markon Best Available (MBA) is being substituted in Oxnard, California. The Oxnard growing region received approximately 0.20” of rain this past Saturday which may lead to quality issues over the next several days. The weather in Coachella has been warm with no rain in the forecast; supplies are ample for Valentine’s Day demand. Markon recommends ordering from Coachella for the best availability and quality.

 

 

Coachella, California

 MFC Strawberries are available

 The region received no rain this past weekend

 Temperatures are in the mid- to upper 80s; supplies are increasing

 Quality is very good; texture is fairly firm to firm

 

Oxnard, California

 MBA Strawberries are available

 Light showers this past Saturday afternoon brought approximately 0.20” of rainfall

 Quality issues such as bruising, water damage, wind damage, and light decay may become issues over the next several days

 Supplies will decrease as crews cull plants to remove damaged fruit; quality is expected to improve by the second pick (later this week)

 More rain could develop next week, furthering quality issues

 

Mexico (Baja and Central Mexico)

 Supplies are fairly limited; demand is strong

 Yields are falling short of production estimates in some varieties due to recent weather challenges

 Bruising, soft texture, and small size are issues

 

 

Florida

 Supplies are limited due to strong East Coast demand

 Recent rain has led to some decay and very soft texture

 Most growers are only shipping to East Coast locations
