UPDATE: Spring 2018 Harvesting Transition
February 13, 2018
The spring harvesting transition from the Arizona/California desert growing region to Huron, California (the San Joaquin Valley region) followed by the Salinas Valley will begin in a limited way the week of March 19.
-
The Yuma growing season will end in approximately eight weeks
- Growers are assessing plantings and estimate seven weeks of supplies remain
- Harvesting schedules will be adjusted to keep production in the desert for as long as possible as well as to transition to Salinas earlier to minimize any shortages
- The Salinas Valley has received zero inches of rain this month (February); historically, the region receives approximately three inches at this time of year
- Without the rain, the Salinas Valley spring start date is expected to be approximately two weeks earlier than normal
- How Mother Nature treats the Salinas Valley over the next few weeks will remain critical to when the first harvest begins
