UPDATE: Salinas Valley Weather
September 18, 2015
Temperatures will be rising into the 80s this weekend and remain elevated through early next week. The weather will begin to cool by the middle of next week, moving into normal levels by the end of the week. Long range models are forecasting cooler temperatures for the last week of September and early October.
- Abnormally warm temperatures will continue to prolong the current heat-related defects experienced over the past several months
- Decay, fringe burn, increased insect pressure, internal burn, rib blight, seeder, and sunscald are problems in commodity items
- Iceberg yields and carton weights remain low, keeping prices elevated; processor demand is strong
- Strawberries will remain limited as bleeding, bruising, reduced shelf-life, and soft texture remain issues
- Value-added items and salad blends will exhibit brittle texture, high respiration rates, increased mechanical damage, internal burn, and premature yellowing
Markon inspectors are monitoring quality very closely and will report any changes. Maintaining the cold chain is critical; ordering for quick turns is recommended.
