Temperatures will climb to 90 degrees in the Salinas Valley and 80 degrees in the coastal areas. Cooler temperatures (low to mid-70s) are expected tomorrow. Scattered showers are also forecast in some parts of the region tomorrow. Temperatures are predicted to rise into the high 80s by Thursday and Friday.

• The heat, combined with moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Blanca, could result in mildew and potentially cause premature breakdown in green leaf, iceberg, romaine, and tender leaf items such as arugula, spinach, and spring mix varieties
• Most commodity volume will climb, but the heat could cause fringe burn, twisting, bracketing, increased insect pressure, dehydration, higher respiration rates, and seeders in lettuces; broccoli crops may exhibit hollow core
• Expect soft texture in strawberries that could lead to bleeding, bruising, smaller size, and mechanical damage
• Asparagus will exhibit more feathering of the tips; warm weather causes tips to go to seed
• Maintaining the cold chain is critical for optimal shelf-life, especially during the summer months
