UPDATE: ROMAINE
November 13, 2020
Romaine prices remain elevated.
- The Salinas Valley season has ended, shifting demand to the Arizona/California desert region
- Initial desert fields are light in weight, but yielding high percentages of harvestable heads; widespread disease issues, as seen in the Salinas Valley, are not being observed
- Quality is excellent: sporadic fringe burn and wind damage is present
- Following this week’s cooler weather (in the high 60s to mid-70s) are higher temperatures in the mid- to upper 80s through next week, which will help promote growth and increase overall industry weights
- Markets are expected to remain elevated through the middle of next week and then decline as field weights rise and Thanksgiving demand winds down
