UPDATE: ROMAINE

September 11, 2020

Romaine prices continue to rise. Demand is extremely strong.

  • Salinas Valley crops experienced a heatwave in mid-August, then again in early September, further reducing supplies as plantings were subjected to extreme temperature fluctuations again
  • Heat-related defects, such as internal and fringe burn, seeder, and sun scalding are limiting harvestable acres
  • Soilborne diseases, including Sclerotinia and Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV), are being detected in fields at a greater rate as the Salinas Valley season continues, reducing yields even more
  • Expect elevated markets through the balance of the Salinas Valley season
  • Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) Romaine pricing is expected to hit first-tier trigger levels beginning Wednesday, September 16
  • The below chart illustrates the most recent extreme heat spike in the Salinas Valley
