UPDATE: ROMAINE

September 01, 2020

Romaine prices are expected to remain elevated through mid-September.

  • California supplies are limited due to abnormally high heat received in mid-August as well as increased demand from the USDA Food Box Program
    • The recent heatwave in the Salinas Valley has reduced available supplies; weather-related defects such as internal burn, seeder, sun scalding, and dehydration will be present in finished packs over the next few weeks
    • Another heatwave is forecast for California’s Central Coast this weekend; this persistent heat will continue to challenge the quality of romaine and other leaf varieties
  • Expect elevated markets over the next two to three weeks
