UPDATE: Rising West Coast Prices

September 11, 2015

This week’s persistently hot weather in the main growing regions of the Salinas Valley and Santa Maria, California is prolonging quality issues, decreasing harvesting time, reducing overall supply, and lowering yields. Broccoli, cauliflower, iceberg, and romaine prices are rising.

Broccoli and Cauliflower

  • Broccoli crown prices are rising into the mid- to high twenties
  • The cauliflower market is reaching into the high teens/low twenties
  • Quality issues are reducing yields
  • Hot temperatures are stunting growth
  • Brown/yellow bead is diminishing broccoli volume
  • Expect rising prices for the next 7 to 10 days

Iceberg

  • Trigger levels for Ready-Set-Serve salad based items will be reached by early next week
  • FOB prices will rise into the high twenties by next week
  • Heat-related defects are lowering yields and carton weights; processor demand is increasing
  • Supplies are tight; dehydration, growth cracking, seeder, and sunburn are quality problems
  • Expect the market to escalate over the next several weeks

Romaine

  • The market will climb into the mid- to high teens through next week
  • Dehydration, fringe burn, large ribs, and seeder are reducing yields
  • Processor demand is strong
