UPDATE: Oranges

The California Valencia season has ended; remaining fruit is extremely scarce. As predicted over the past two weeks, a supply gap began this week and will continue through the week of October 12. New crop Navel harvesting has started; supplies will be tight until the season is fully underway. The majority of suppliers will begin production next week. Limited quantities of new crop Navels will become available for shipping the week of October 19. Texas early season and Navel oranges can be loaded in South Texas and more sporadically in Delano, California.
California Oranges
- The California Valencia season has ended
- Remaining fruit will be depleted over the next several days
- Quality is fair
- New crop Navel harvesting has started; supplies will be tight until the season is fully underway
- Fruit will be placed in gas rooms for three to five days to enhance color
- Color will be light orange to orange at time of shipping
- Oranges are juicy; sugar levels will range from 9 to 10 Brix
- Sizes range from 72- to 138-count fruit
- Demand exceeds supply for all sizes and grades
- Prices will remain elevated through October
- The Navel market will start high (comparable to Valencia levels)
- Prices are expected to inch down in early November
- The industry will fully transition to California Navels the week of October 26
Texas Oranges
- Stocks are available for loading in South Texas and more sporadically in Delano, California
- Fruit is being put into gas rooms for three to five days to enhance color
- Sizes range from 88- to 113-count oranges
- Strong demand and inconsistent supplies continue to push up pricing
