UPDATE: Oranges

September 19, 2017

Markon First Crop and Markon Essentials Valencia Oranges are extremely limited; packer label supplies are being substituted as needed. California stocks are tight as the season is ending; demand exceeds supply of 88-count and smaller sizes. Offshore and Texas supplies are limited as a result. Prices are rising.

  • 88-count and smaller-size California Valencia oranges will be coming to an end the week of September 25
  • Very few 48-, 56-, and 72-count Valencias will remain on the market through mid-October
    • Grade and size flexibility will be needed for orders placed through the end of the Valencia season
    • 72-hour order lead-time is recommended
    • Small sizes will not increase until the California Navel season begins the week of October 16
  • The offshore market continues to rise due to tight supplies
    • These stocks are dominated by 72-count and larger sizes; 88-count and smaller fruit is extremely limited
    • Most oranges are fancy grade with stickers
  • The Texas season is getting a slow start; supplies will remain very tight for the next two weeks
    • Size is dominated by 88- and 72-count fruit; 113- and 138-count oranges are limited
    • Fruit is rougher in appearance compared to California oranges, meaning a Texas Combo grade is comparable to a California Choice grade
    • Both external and internal color is deeper yellow compared to California and offshore oranges
  • Prices are elevated in all regions; current prices for small sizes are reaching all-time highs
  • Offshore and Texas fruit will be supplemented as needed when domestic supplies fall short
