UPDATE: Onions
May 07, 2015
Markon First Crop (MFC) Onions are available in California, Idaho, Oregon, Texas, and Washington. Storage stocks from the Northwestern regions will remain on the market through the end of the month. Expect MFC Onions from New Mexico to become available the first week of June. Markon will continue to send recommendations regarding whether to purchase in the Northwest or South Texas/California; factors include quality, supply, price levels, and members’ distribution centers’ geographic locations.
California
- MFC Red and Yellow Onions are available
- Large sizes dominate the crop, especially jumbo and colossal supplies
- Spring onions are milder in flavor and lighter in color than storage stocks from the Northwest
Eastern Oregon/Idaho/Washington
- MFC Yellow Onions will remain available for the next several weeks; MFC Red Onions will be sporadic
- Breakdown, internal decay, and sprouting are becoming more apparent; supplies are diminishing sooner than anticipated
- The storage stocks that are being shipped continue to maintain solid texture, globe-like shape, dry flaky husks, and zesty, peppery flavor
Texas
- MFC Red and Yellow Onions remain inconsistent due to wet and cool weather conditions; yields are lower than normal
- Approximately 75-80% of the Texas crop has been affected by seeders, a condition that occurs when the bulb of the onion does not receive enough heat, preventing maturation
- Spring onions are milder in flavor and lighter in color than storage stocks from the Northwest
New Mexico
- MFC Red and Yellow Onions are expected on the market the first week of June; sporadic packer label supplies will be available the week of May 25
- Acreage will be comparable to last season’s crop; weather pending, yields will be high
- Jumbo and colossal sizes dominate this crop
- Spring onions are milder in flavor and lighter in color than storage stocks from the Northwest
