UPDATE: Onions

March 28, 2018

Markon First Crop (MFC) Red and Yellow Onions are readily available in the Northwest. Limited supplies of fresh-run Texas-grown MFC Red and Yellow Onions will be available at the end of next week. Fresh-run Mexican onions, crossing into South Texas, are also being shipped.

Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and Washington

  • MFC Red and Yellow Onions from Idaho, Oregon, and Washington will be on the market through early May
  • Remaining storage stocks are small in size
    • The crop is dominated by medium and jumbo sizes
    • Very few super colossal onions will be available
  • The white onion season is beginning to wind down and should be depleted by the week of April 16
  • Expect diminishing quality in storage shipments as the season wraps up
  • Onions will have golden, cured skins, but may be softer than early and mid-season onions
  • Problems may include occasional internal decay and mold

South Texas

  • Fresh-run, Texas-grown onions will have a small profile, mostly yielding medium and jumbo sizes
  • Medium- and jumbo-size onions also dominate Mexican-grown red, white, and yellow onion stocks
    • Onions are firm, with occasional mechanical bruising and scarring from harvesting equipment
  • Fresh-run onions will have feathery skins and light color/exterior skins compared to Northwest storage onions
  • Jumbo yellow No. 2 onions are not available in Texas due to a federal marketing order

California

  • MFC Red and Yellow Onions will become available the last week of April
  • The region is experiencing ideal weather conditions; a large size profile dominated by jumbo and colossal sizes is expected

New Mexico

  • MFC Red and Yellow Onions are forecast to hit the market in early May
