UPDATE: Onions
July 10, 2017
Unseasonably high temperatures, reaching into the 100-degree range, persist in California’s San Joaquin Valley and Southern New Mexico, affecting onion size and overall volume. Prices continue to climb.
- Markon First Crop (MFC) Yellow Super Colossal and Colossal Onions will be most damaged by the heat; high temperatures slow growth and lead to more mechanical defects during the production process
- MFC Red and Yellow Jumbo and Medium Onions will remain available
- MFC White Jumbo and Medium supplies are sporadic
-
All trucks will follow onion sheds’ transit temperature recommendations to maintain quality
- Airflow is key to preserving shelf-life and deterring mold, especially upon arrival
- New crop 2017–2018 onion harvesting will start in the Northwest in late August
