Update: Onions

April 13, 2017

Northwest storage inventory for Markon First Crop (MFC) Onions is diminishing. Demand is steady; however, prices have inched up as the end of the season nears.

Idaho, Oregon, and Washington

  • MFC Red and Yellow Onions will be available in Idaho and Oregon through late April
  • MFC Red and Yellow Onions from Washington will be available through the first week of May
    • Remaining red onion volume is sufficient
    • Yellow stocks are starting to tighten
    • White onion supplies are nearly depleted
  • Expect lower quality in storage shipments as the season winds down
    • Onions will have golden, cured skins, but may be softer than usual and/or exhibit double-centered cores
    • Occasional detection of internal decay and mold are also anticipated this time of the year

South Texas

  • MFC Red, White, and Yellow Onion supplies will be sporadic over the next few weeks
  • Prices are beginning to inch up
  • Spring/fresh-run onions will have feathery skins and light color/exterior skin compared to Northwest storage onions

California

  • Limited supplies of MFC Yellow Onions will become available next week
  • The season for MFC Red and White Onions will start the week of April 24
    • Size will be dominated by large—mainly jumbo, colossal, and super colossal sizes
    • Medium onions will be tight all season

New Mexico

  • MFC Red, White, and Yellow Onions are forecast to hit the market in mid-May
