UPDATE: Onions
January 19, 2017
Inclement weather continues to affect the Idaho/Oregon onion region. More storage and packing facilities have suffered damage and roof collapses due to the amounts of snow that have accumulated. Onion supplies are decreasing due to these production interruptions. Prices continue to inch up in all regions due to lower volume. More snow is forecast in the Idaho/Oregon area through the beginning of next week which will further slow growers’ ability to produce and ship onions. Markon will continue to monitor the situation and update further as needed.
- Loading delays are expected due to shorter production windows and diminished supplies
- Temperatures must be 18 degrees or warmer (without snowfall) for five to seven hours of the day to haul potatoes from cellars to packing sheds
- The cold weather can cause translucent scales on outer layers, causing them to become soft and/or spongy
