UPDATE: Onions
June 03, 2016
Markon First Crop Red and Yellow Onions will be shipped out of Central California and New Mexico through mid-August. While the recent transition out of Texas and Southern California limited inventory, higher volume is expected the week of June 13. Growers planted onions later-than-normal this season; supply levels will increase in two weeks, decreasing prices.
- Fresh-run onions from California and New Mexico possess spongier texture, lighter color, and milder flavor than Northwestern stocks
- Overall acreage is slightly higher this season
- Yields are above average
- Expect adequate supplies through summer
- Starting the week of June 13, Northwest growers will begin shipping over-winter stocks, increasing overall supplies on the market
