UPDATE: ONION PRICES

March 31, 2020

Markon First Crop (MFC) Red and Yellow Onions remain available in the Northwest; prices are declining in all regions. Retail demand is keeping medium yellow onion prices elevated.

Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and Washington

  • MFC Red and Yellow Onions from Idaho, Oregon, and Washington will be on the market through April
  • Remaining storage stocks are large in size; the crop is dominated by jumbos and colossals
  • White onions are nearly depleted; supplies will be sporadic as the season concludes
  • Expect diminishing quality in storage shipments as the season wraps up
    • Onions will have golden, cured skins, but may be softer than early and mid-season stocks
    • Problems may include occasional internal decay, mold, and multiple centers/hearts (photos attached)

South Texas

  • Fresh-run, Texas-grown onions are available
  • Fresh-run onions will have feathery skins and light color when compared to Northwest storage onions (photos attached)
  • Jumbo yellow No. 2 onions are not available in Texas due to a federal marketing order

California

  • Fresh-run MFC Onions will be available in California’s Imperial Valley the week of April 27

New Mexico

  • Fresh-run MFC Onions will be available in New Mexico’s Hatch Valley the week of May 18
